Anti-ageing injections are small intramuscular injections of a neurotoxin drug called botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily relax locally injected muscles, smoothing out existing wrinkles and helping to prevent further lines from forming. Prices are per number of areas treated.
Treatment for bruxism / grinding teeth or reducing / slimming down of jawline and lower face re-shaping.
Commonly known as the 'Nefertiti' neck lift, the platysmal bands of the neck are treated with neurotoxin, relaxing the vertical muscles which run from the base of the neck and up the sides, softening lines and providing excellent overall rejuvenation of the neck and décolletage.
A consultation is required for all injectable treatments. Exact prices will be confirmed during your consultation. There is no cost for a consultation or any obligation to go ahead with treatment. Refer to the Additional Information section below for further information about each treatment including what to expect before, during and after each procedure.
What are Anti Ageing / Wrinkle Relaxing Injections?
Anti-ageing injections are small intramuscular injections of a neurotoxin drug called botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily relax locally injected muscles, smoothing out existing wrinkles and helping to prevent further lines from forming.
Typical treatment areas include the forehead, glabella (in-between the eyebrows), crow's feet (around the eyes), bunny lines, smoker's lines, gummy smiles, masseter muscles (teeth grinding/bruxism) and the neck (platysmal bands).
Botulinum toxin type A is a prescription drug which can only be prescribed by a doctor or an independent prescriber. It should also only be administered by an aesthetics practitioner who is a qualified, registered and insured healthcare professional.
Skin&Spirit work with the well known brands of neurotoxin on the market. The most appropriate brand for you will be discussed at your consultation.
Very little. You can return to your normal routine almost immediately. However, it is recommended that you don't apply make up, massage or rub the injected area (to avoid migration of the neurotoxin to other areas) or engage in sports or physical activity which would promote sweating for 24 hours.
An initial consultation is required for all new clients, during which a medical history and clinical assessment will be undertaken. You will be provided with a full explanation of the procedure, its clinical/aesthetic benefits, the risks, aftercare and the consent process and you can ask as many questions as you need to make an informed decision. We recommend that you go away and think carefully about the information you have been provided and conduct your own research before consenting to treatment.
After the initial consultation has taken place (or a review consultation for existing clients), the treatment time itself takes approximately 15 - 30 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated.
You should arrive at the Skin&Spirit clinic 10 minutes prior to your appointment time, ideally with a make up free face (but we can remove this for you if not) and having not drank any alcohol or taken any non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (eg. aspirin, ibuprofen) in the previous 24 hours.
After cleansing and preparing your skin, you will receive a series of small injections of botulinum toxin type A into the muscle of your chosen area, using a very fine and small needle, the same as an insulin needle.
You can expect a brief moment of discomfort due to the injection, however, most clients find the pain very minimal. It is sometimes described as a little "pop" as the needle goes into the muscle, however, this is over extremely quickly.
A little temporary redness and swelling in the local area is to be expected, however, this usually settles very quickly and is not normally noticeable within 30 minutes after treatment.
Although anti ageing injections involve little pain, if you are particularly scared of needles/pain sensitive to needle injections, topical numbing cream may be available.
It takes up to 2 weeks for the injections to achieve their full effect. The aesthetic result for each person will vary and depends on the severity of their lines and wrinkles before treatment and whether static lines were already in place. For deeper static lines, softening of the line may be the best possible result.
A follow up appointment is offered to all clients 2 weeks post treatment to review the final result and ascertain if further dosing is required.
The results last approximately 3 months, although every person is unique and people respond differently to the various brands on the market. Some clients state that they still have reduced movement up to 6 months after injection. For the best results, it is recommended that the treatment is repeated every 3 months.
Risks and Complications
Published clinical data provides compelling evidence of the aesthetics/client benefits and safety profile of botulinum toxin type A for reducing lines and wrinkles.
Generally, anti ageing injections using botulinum toxin type A are well tolerated. Common side effects from treatment include redness, swelling and bleeding at the injection site (although this is usually quite minimal). There is some potential for bruising and headaches post treatment, however, this resolves quite quickly. It is also common to experience dry eyes (leading to your eyes watering more) with toxin treatment for crow's feet lines.
The main complications that can arise from receiving neurotoxin injections are allergic/sensitive reactions and risks associated with inhibiting muscles or nerve impulses in facial areas which have a function. For example, incorrect placement, overdosing or migration of toxin in the forehead or glabella can cause eyelid ptosis (droop). In this unlikely event, eye drops can be prescribed which improve the ptosis over time. Additional toxin may be administered which counteracts the droop (although this is not always possible). Ultimately, the toxin will wear off over the course of 3 months and any ptosis or lack of muscle function/facial movement will be completely resolved.
Botulinum toxin type A is not appropriate for any clients who are pregnant or breast feeding.
